Private/Individual Accommodation in Care Homes (England) Policy

Policy Statement

This policy sets out the values and principles underpinning {{org_field_name}}’s approach to the accommodation it provides.

It is produced in line with the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 to provide safe, person-centred care that always maintains people’s dignity and respect in accommodation which is clean, secure, suitable for the purpose, properly used, properly maintained, and appropriately located (Regulation 15: Premises and Equipment).

People living here should expect their quality of life to be enhanced by the provision of their own safe, well-maintained and comfortable private bedroom. Everyone who lives here has the right to live their life with privacy, dignity, independence and choice and the quality of the home environment is a key factor in this regard.

Individual Accommodation Policy

Note:

This needs adapting to local circumstances.

Every person who comes to live in our home is offered, in line with our terms and conditions, a private bedroom with an en suite toilet.

All individual accommodation is:

a. well decorated with domestic style lighting and good-quality domestic style furniture
b. set out in such a way as to avoid any “institutional” feel or atmosphere
c. fully accessible to people with disabilities, mobility problems and to those who use wheelchairs
d. furnished/fitted with:
i. a clean comfortable bed (a minimum of 900mm wide and a suitable, safe height for the individual)
ii. bed linen
iii. curtains or blinds
iv. a mirror
v. overhead and bedside lighting
vi. comfortable seating for up to two people
vii. drawers and enclosed space for hanging clothes
viii. at least two accessible double electric sockets
ix. a table to sit at and a bedside table
x. a lockable storage space for medication, money and valuables
e. carpeted or with an equivalent covering
f. fitted with locks suited to the person’s capabilities and accessible to staff in emergencies.

All bed clothing, curtains and carpets meet the current British Standard for fire retardancy.

The provision of private rooms and quiet, restful areas has been balanced with homely, communal areas where residents can mix and be with each other.

People may furnish and organise their room as they wish. However, as part of their conditions and terms of residence, they will be asked to give their consent to allowing staff access to their rooms for the purposes of providing care and to keep the rooms clean and safe in line with current standards and regulations.
