Shared and Communal Facilities in Care Homes (England) Policy
Policy Statement
This policy sets out the values, principles and procedures underpinning {{org_field_name}}’s approach to its shared facilities.
It is in line with the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 to provide safe, effective person-centred care that always maintains people’s dignity and respect and promotes their social lives and wellbeing.
People should expect their quality of life to be enhanced by the provision of safe, well-maintained and comfortable indoor and outdoor communal facilities. Everyone has the right to live their life with privacy, dignity, independence and choice and that the quality of the home environment is a key factor in this regard.
“Shared facilities” refers to the communal facilities within the home that are for everyone living in the home to share. Such areas include the lounge, dining room, rooms for meeting visitors privately, hallways and gardens.
Shared and Communal Facilities Policy
Note:
This description will vary from home to home and will reflect the Statement of Purpose and the home’s brochures.
The purpose of the home is to provide comfortable, family-like care. The premises are thus divided into small units, each with its own communal focus and community area.
The environment has been designed to encourage and support the independence of individual residents while promoting their support and safety through comprehensive risk assessment and management procedures. The provision of private rooms and quiet, restful areas has been balanced with homely, communal areas where residents can mix and be with each other. While residents may elect to eat their meals in their rooms, they are encouraged to eat in the communal dining room, reflecting the home’s belief that mealtimes are an important social occasion.
All communal areas of the home are:
- well decorated with domestic style lighting and good-quality domestic style furniture
- set out in such a way as to avoid any “institutional” feel or atmosphere
- kept clean and tidy with all precautions taken to prevent infections and the spreading of infections
- fully accessible to people with disabilities and mobility needs and those using wheelchairs or other aid
- provided with facilities to keep people occupied and stimulated in line with their interests and assessed needs.
