Washing Facilities and Toilets in Care Homes (England) Policy
Policy Statement
This service considers that people living here should expect their quality of life to be enhanced by the provision of their own safe, well-maintained and comfortable environment. Everyone has the right to live their life with privacy, dignity, independence and choice and that the quality of the home environment is a key factor in this regard.
The policy is written to meet the requirements of Regulation 12: Safe Care and Treatment and Regulation 15: Premises and Equipment of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.
Washing Facilities and Toilets Policy
The policy of {{org_field_name}} is to enable the people who live here to wash in privacy and to provide appropriate aids and equipment to facilitate their independence and address their assessed needs, including any risks to their safety. All facilities are designed with people’s safety in mind and in line with risk assessments, which are regularly carried out.
The home regularly reviews its procedures to comply with the latest Department of Health Guidance on Infection Control and Management.
To achieve these aims the home provides:
- accessible toilets close to lounge and dining areas
- one assisted bath for every eight people
- en suite facilities with wheelchair access attached to every bedroom containing a toilet and a washbasin
- hand-grab rails in every toilet and bathroom and whatever modifications, adaptations and aids are necessary for individual residents
- doors to all toilets that can be secured on the inside to afford privacy for people, but are of such a design that they can easily be opened from the outside
- adequate domestic resources to ensure that all toilets, wash facilities and bathrooms are cleaned on a daily basis and maintained in a sanitary and hygienic condition.

- hot water is stored at temperatures of at least 60°C and distributed at 50°C minimum in line with Health and Safety Executive recommendations for the prevention of legionella
- to prevent risks from scalding, pre-set valves of a type unaffected by changes in water pressure and which have fail-safe devices are fitted to provide water close to 43°C
- all temperatures, thermostats and fittings are regularly checked by a qualified plumbing and heating engineer.

Training
All staff receive training that combines person-centred care principles and practice with the established health and safety measures that must be taken to reduce the risks of personal harm to both people using services and staff from the procedures that are involved.
