Winter Weather Policy

Policy Statement

{{org_field_name}} recognises that cold and icy winter weather can present a serious threat to the welfare of the people we visit.

Aim of the Policy

This policy is intended to set out the values, principles and policies underpinning {{org_field_name}}’s approach to winter weather risks.

Winter Weather Policy

To reduce the risk of emergencies due to winter, cold, icy and/or stormy weather, {{org_field_name}} will:

• maintain a current list of emergency contact phone numbers, including those for electricity, gas and water suppliers for vulnerable people (it is the responsibility of the registered manager to keep this up to date)
• ensure that vulnerable people’s homes have adequate heating
• discourage the use of extra heaters wherever possible by ensuring that people’s homes are kept warm and comfortable through standard central heating
• have a backup heating plan in case of power cuts
• encourage vulnerable people to keep on hand extra blankets
• encourage vulnerable people to stock a few days’ supply of water, required medications, and food that does not need to be refrigerated or cooked
• have contingency plans for vulnerable people if it is not possible to keep their home warm.

Training

All staff should be encouraged to read the policy on winter weather risks as part of their induction process. Annual refresher training/briefings will take place in the autumn on winter weather precautions.
