Quality of Daily Life in Care Homes (Scotland) Policy
Policy Statement
This policy sets out the values and principles underpinning {{org_field_name}}’s approach to the daily lives of the people receiving our services. {{org_field_name}} recognises that every person living in the home has the right to privacy, dignity, independence and choice. It will work with all legal and caring agencies to uphold this right.
The home’s approach is in line with the requirements of the person-centred values underpinning the national health and social care standards set out in My Support, My Life and this policy helps answer key question 1: “How well do we support people’s wellbeing?” in the Quality Framework for Care Homes for Older People.
In {{org_field_name}}, all people who receive our care make their own choices and decisions about how to spend their time. To support them in this, the home carries out the following.
People receiving our services:
- join in social events, entertainment and activities provided by {{org_field_name}} only if they want to
- can be confident that the staff will explain, justify and record any limits on their independence in their personal plan and know that these will be reviewed regularly
- can be confident that the staff are trained to listen to their ideas and views
- know that they can keep up relationships with friends, relatives and carers, and links with their own community and staff will support them to do this
- are free to come and go as they please, unless there are specific legal requirements that prevent this
- have visitors at times to suit them and can now (as a result of a change in law following the Covid-19 pandemic) exercise the right to have visits under all circumstances
- have no restrictions placed on the time they get up or go to bed
- are supported and encouraged to use local services such as hairdressers, shops and banks
- have access to information about local events, facilities and activities
- can be confident that staff will help them to arrange meetings with visitors, and help any disabled friends and relatives into and around the building.
Training
All staff must understand and follow the policy on supporting people receiving care to follow a lifestyle of their own choosing. The policy is covered in the home’s induction training and constantly reinforced through management and supervision.
