Privacy and Dignity in Care Homes (Wales) Policy

Policy Statement

This policy sets out the values and principles underpinning this care service’s approach to privacy and dignity. Privacy is an absolute right of everyone receiving its care and is an integral to the preservation of each individual’s personal dignity.

{{org_field_name}} will work in collaboration with all legal and caring agencies to uphold these rights.

Our approach is in line with the principles and requirements of the Regulated Services (Service Providers and Responsible Individuals) (Wales) Regulations 2017, particularly Regulation 21: Standards of Care and Support — Overarching Requirements, Regulation 25: Respect and Sensitivity, and Regulation 44: Premises — Accommodation-based Services Only.

Privacy Policy

Everyone receiving care in {{org_field_name}} should:

• be offered private, single accommodation furnished, decorated and equipped to a high standard which they may use and enjoy as and when they wish
• be allowed to bring their own items of furniture, if they so desire, to add their own touches to their rooms
• have locked cabinets for the security of valuables with a key which they themselves keep
• be able to entertain guests in private in their accommodation as they wish
• be entitled to expect confidentiality in all matters and for their permission to be obtained whenever private information needs to be made available to others (excepting that information necessary to staff to provide proper care).

Dignity Policy

Everyone receiving care in {{org_field_name}} should:

• be treated with dignity in the way in which the staff deal with dressings, bathing, feeding, incontinence and all other needs
• be addressed in the manner that they choose, including in the Welsh language if that is their wish
• be respected for their individuality, their views and the way in which they are accustomed to conduct their lives
• be consulted on any matter or activity, which may impinge upon their life within the home in any way, and to have their wishes respected
• retain all the rights enjoyed by individuals remaining in their own homes within the community
• be entitled to have their own culture, religious practices and beliefs observed and respected at all times.

Procedures

Staff should remember the following.

1. Always treat people receiving care with sensitivity, respect and thoughtfulness.
2. Always knock before entering a person’s accommodation.
3. Always address people receiving care by the title or name that they prefer.
4. Always treat people receiving care as individuals.
5. Allow people to do things for themselves whenever appropriate.
6. Never gossip about people receiving care.
7. Never discuss private or personal issues with a person receiving care in public.
8. Avoid the use of patronising or insulting language.
9. Give appropriate room and space to people receiving care.
10. Always treat people in a dignified and sensitive way when performing intimate care tasks.

Training

All staff must understand and follow the policy on privacy and dignity.

Induction training on privacy and dignity has been developed in line with the All Wales Induction Framework for Health and Social Care.
