Information and Consultation with Staff Policy

Policy Statement

The organisation has a legal obligation to consult with employees in certain situations, eg when collective redundancies are proposed. It believes, however, that the organisation and its employees benefit from the sharing of views and opinions in other areas. The procedure below provides guidance on when and how the organisation will consult employees and the methods of consultation.

Alternative Policy Statement (only necessary where an employer employs at least 50 employees and has received a valid employee request or has made a valid employer notification): The organisation has, in addition, set up an Information and Consultation Agreement (ICA). Consultation will take place with duly elected or chosen information and consultation representatives.

Procedure

  1. The organisation values its employees’ opinions and ideas. The purpose of consultation is for the organisation and its employees to put forward their views before any decision is reached by the organisation. The organisation will give serious consideration to employees’ views and suggestions when making decisions.
  2. Employees will be consulted at team or departmental meetings with regard to general issues that are of interest to or affect a team or department. Line managers are responsible for disseminating such local information and for providing opportunities for employees to express their opinions on proposed developments.
  3. Issues that affect employees across the organisation will be discussed via the organisation’s Joint Consultative Committee. Further information on the Joint Consultative Committee is available from the Committee’s employee representatives, the trade union or the HR department. (amend as required)
  4. Alternative Clause(s) — to be used where the organisation employs at least 50 employees and has received a valid employee request or has made a valid employer notification. Issues that affect employees across the organisation will be discussed via the organisation’s Information and Consultation Agreement. Further information on the ICA is available from the Information and Consultation representatives/HR department. (amend as required)
  5. From time to time the organisation may choose to consult employees via an employee survey. Employees are encouraged to complete surveys, which are anonymous and evaluated by an external organisation. The organisation views employee surveys as a valuable opportunity to obtain direct feedback from its employees.
  6. The organisation will continuously review this policy to ensure that it meets its consultation needs. As part of the review process, feedback from employees will be invited.
