Shared and Communal Facilities in Care Homes (Scotland) Policy

Policy Statement

This policy set outs the values, principles and policies underpinning {{org_field_name}}’s approach to its shared facilities.

It is in line with national care standards, My Support, My Life, which require service providers to ensure that people experience high-quality care and that they have confidence in their care providers to provide safe, effective person-centred care that always maintains people’s dignity and respect and promotes their social lives and wellbeing. For example:

People should expect their quality of life to be enhanced by the provision of safe, well-maintained and comfortable indoor and outdoor communal facilities. Everyone has the right to live their life with privacy, dignity, independence and choice and that the quality of the home environment is a key factor in this regard.

“Shared facilities” refers to the communal facilities within the home that are for everyone living in the home to share. Such areas include the lounge, dining room, rooms for meeting visitors privately, hallways and gardens.

The purpose of the home is to provide comfortable, family-like care. The premises are thus divided into small units, each with its own communal focus and community area.

The environment has been designed to encourage and support people’s independence while promoting their support and safety through comprehensive risk assessment and management procedures. The provision of private rooms and quiet, restful areas has been balanced with homely, communal areas where people can mix and be with each other. While people may elect to eat their meals in their rooms, they are encouraged to eat in the communal dining room, reflecting the home’s belief that mealtimes are an important social occasion.
