Winter Weather in Care Homes Policy

Policy Statement

{{org_field_name}} recognises that cold and icy winter weather can present a serious threat to the welfare of service users and to the home itself.

Aim of the Policy

This policy is intended to set out the values, principles and policies underpinning this home’s approach to winter weather risks.

Policy Statement

To reduce the risk of emergencies due to winter, cold, icy and or stormy weather, {{org_field_name}} will:

• ensure that staff have a current list of emergency contact phone numbers for electricity, gas and water suppliers
• ensure that heating equipment is installed properly and that a trained specialist has inspected and serviced it every year
• monitor the temperature in residents’ rooms and communal rooms
• discourage the use of extra heaters wherever possible by ensuring that the home is kept warm and comfortable through standard central heating
• have a backup heating plan in case of power cuts
• keep on hand extra blankets, flashlights with extra batteries, matches, a snow shovel and rock salt
• stock a few days’ supply of water, required medications, and food that does not need to be refrigerated or cooked
• have contingency plans for temporarily rehousing residents if it is not possible to keep the home warm.

Training

All staff should be encouraged to read the policy on winter weather risks as part of their induction process. Annual refresher training/briefings will take place in the autumn on winter weather precautions.
