Supporting People Living with Autism Policy
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that {{org_field_name}} provides a safe, supportive, and person-centred environment for individuals with autism. This policy establishes a structured approach to understanding, accommodating, and supporting the unique needs of residents with autism. Our care home is committed to ensuring that individuals with autism receive the appropriate care and support to lead fulfilling lives, in alignment with the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016, the Equality Act 2010, and the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. This policy aims to reduce barriers, promote inclusion, and support residents in achieving their full potential.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all staff members, including care workers, support staff, administrative personnel, and external professionals involved in the care and well-being of individuals with autism at {{org_field_name}}. It covers all aspects of daily care, communication, environmental adaptations, behaviour management, sensory considerations, and staff training. It also applies to families, advocates, and external health professionals who collaborate with us to ensure that residents receive individualised, comprehensive support. This policy is relevant to individuals of all ages and across various levels of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
3. Principles of Autism Support
Person-Centred Care:
- Each resident with autism will have an individualised care plan tailored to their strengths, preferences, sensory needs, and communication style.
- Care plans will be developed in collaboration with the resident, their family, and healthcare professionals to ensure that their unique needs and preferences are fully understood.
- Staff will use structured routines, predictable environments, and personalised support strategies to reduce anxiety and enhance independence.
- Flexibility will be maintained to accommodate changing needs and evolving capabilities.
Communication and Interaction Support:
- Staff will use clear, structured, and direct communication to support understanding and engagement.
- Alternative communication methods, such as visual aids, Makaton, Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), and assistive technology, will be provided where needed to enhance communication.
- Staff will be trained to recognise non-verbal cues, social anxieties, and preferred interaction methods, adapting their approach accordingly.
- Residents will be encouraged to express themselves in ways that feel comfortable for them, with staff supporting the development of social and communication skills at a suitable pace.
Creating an Autism-Friendly Environment:
- Sensory-friendly environments will be maintained, with adjustments such as low lighting, quiet areas, and minimising overstimulation to help residents feel comfortable and secure.
- Residents will have access to sensory rooms, fidget tools, and calming spaces to help regulate emotions and sensory input.
- Predictability will be prioritised, with clear schedules, structured activities, visual timetables, and social stories to reduce anxiety and support understanding.
- Staff will ensure that the physical environment is adapted to support the unique needs of individuals with autism, including spaces for privacy and relaxation.
Supporting Emotional Well-being and Behaviour:
- A Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach will be used to help residents manage challenges, express their needs, and develop self-regulation techniques.
- Staff will be trained to recognise triggers and early signs of distress and intervene proactively to prevent escalation.
- Residents will be supported through individual coping strategies, relaxation techniques, and structured de-escalation approaches to manage moments of heightened stress or anxiety.
- Staff will maintain a non-judgmental and supportive approach, ensuring that all behaviours are understood as forms of communication rather than disruptive actions.
Encouraging Independence and Social Inclusion:
- Residents will be encouraged to develop daily living skills, such as meal preparation, personal hygiene, money management, and community participation.
- Meaningful activities will be tailored to individual interests and strengths, promoting confidence and well-being.
- Social opportunities will be adapted to suit different comfort levels, ensuring individuals can engage at their own pace and in a manner that suits them.
- Staff will work to increase community engagement, ensuring that residents feel included and empowered to participate in social activities both within and outside the care home.
4. Staff Training and Responsibilities
- All staff must complete mandatory autism awareness training to ensure a high standard of care and understanding.
- Training will cover communication strategies, sensory processing differences, managing challenging behaviours, and fostering independence.
- Regular refresher training will be provided, covering the latest research, best practices, and legal requirements.
- Staff will work collaboratively, ensuring a consistent, understanding, and structured approach to supporting residents with autism.
- A dedicated Autism Lead may be appointed to oversee best practices, provide ongoing support to staff, and advocate for the needs of residents with autism.
